Naval Warfare

The Naval Warfare group plans, observes, and analyzes operational tests of new surface and undersea naval warfare systems in support of DoD’s Director of Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) and other DoD sponsors. Specific systems in the Naval Warfare portfolio include new ship and submarine class programs, like the USS Columbia ballistic missile submarine class, the USS Zumwalt guided missile destroyer (DDG) class, the USS San Antonio Flight II amphibious transport dock (LPD) class, and the next flight of Aegis Destroyers (DDG 51 Flight III). We also provide support regarding the weapons (e.g., missiles and torpedoes) and sensors (e.g., radars and sonar systems) carried on new ship classes and on legacy ships. In addition to providing analytical support to DOT&E on traditional operational tests, the Naval Warfare group provides support to DoD on several modeling and simulation intensive programs such as the Mk 48 Heavyweight Torpedo and the Standard Missile-6 program. Thanks to our decades of experience, our researchers are among the most knowledgeable experts with regards to the operational testing of Naval Warfare systems. This is especially true for mine countermeasures programs, total ship and submarine test programs, undersea warfare programs, and shipboard air defense programs. By leveraging our collective experience we are able to provide DOT&E with key insights on how to develop operational tests to evaluate the mission success of the system under test. We also leverage our knowledge of naval systems and modeling to provide analyses in support of DoD’s future program and budget development process.
