IDA has an extensive team of experts on natural hazards and disasters, including meteorologists, oceanographers, engineers, geologists, hydrologists, economists, and social scientists. Together, we answer critical questions from our sponsors on topics that include disaster response, hazard risk reduction, preparedness, and mapping. Our research can inform Federal agency activities in the emergency management, insurance, public health, engineering and zoning, and alert and warning spheres.

To increase our nation's climate security, resilience and adaptation to extreme weather and a changing climate, IDA researchers develop strategies to incorporate climate and energy analyses into all aspects of the Federal Government and DoD, including threat assessments, operational plans, wargaming capabilities, cost benefit analyses, greenhouse gas accounting, and technology assessments. Climate security studies require a demanding blend of specialties and analytical capabilities. IDA's researchers include climate scientists, engineers, economists, data scientists and other specialties necessary for addressing the policy challenges of the Federal Government and DoD.

Critical minerals and natural resources are central to the national security and economic growth of the United States as well as for the development and application of new technologies. IDA researchers include experts on every link of mineral and resource supply chains including geology, mineral economics, energy markets, regional foreign policy, and industrial processes and manufacturing.

IDA's experts on environmental health topics include toxicologists, epidemiologists, biologists, chemists, and public health specialists. Our staff have supported Federal agency activities on pandemic preparedness, PFAS and other pollutants, healthy workplaces, air and water pollution, climate impacts on public health infrastructure, antimicrobial resistance, One Health, sanitation and hygiene, and hazardous materials and waste.
