In the next decade, demand for high-energy-density batteries is expected to boom, driven by the rapidly expanding market for electric vehicles. This report explores the current state of the electric vehicle battery supply chain and domestic research enterprise to identify weaknesses in the U.S. infrastructure for producing this critical technology. This analysis draws upon a collection of openly available sources to analyze the interconnected global supply chains for electric vehicle batteries, projected future battery manufacturing scale, and the domestic battery innovation ecosystem. We highlight the opportunity for the United States to build critical expertise in emerging battery manufacturing technologies that could enable us to cement a foothold in an industry that we have otherwise failed to penetrate.
