IDA Researcher Joins Military Writers Guild
photo, Thomas Greenwood Joint Advanced Warfighting Division’s Tom Greenwood’s nomination to become a member of the Military Writers Guild was recently approved by the Board of Directors along with seventeen others, including individuals from U.S. Congress; branches of U.S., Australian, and British military; as well as think tanks, academia, and journalism. The guild is composed of individuals with diverse perspectives and backgrounds who are committed to all forms of writing about the military, conflict, and national security.
IDA Researcher Receives Certificate of Merit
Information Technology and Systems Division’s Randy Simpson received a Certificate of Merit for the paper on “End-Point Device Choices for the Enterprise,” which he presented at the World Congress on Engineering 2019 International Conference of Information Security and Internet Engineering.

IDA Staff Members Engage with Local High School Students The second annual IDA/T.C. Williams High School Communications Conference was held October 23, 2019, in Alexandria, Virginia. IDA volunteers taught students through presentations, discussion, and activities about written communication skills, presenting visual and technical data, building resumes, successful teaming, Toastmasters International, and more. IDA volunteers included Greg Davis (shown here) Keith Green, Torg Anderson, Rhett Moeller, Cary Dier, Karina Willette, Andrew Flack, Deena Disraelly, Nina Chambers, and Heather Neff.
CCR-P Researcher Receives ISSA International Award
Center for Communications Research – Princeton researcher Victor S. Miller received a Hall of Fame award from the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA). The award—announced at the 9th annual ISSA International Summit in October in Irving/Dallas, Texas—is given in recognition of exceptional leadership qualities and exemplary commitment to the information security profession.
IDA Researcher Participates in Cyber Workshop and Panel
Information Technology and Systems Division’s Michael Fischerkeller participated in a workshop on “State of the Field of Cyber Conflict” held November 11, 2019 at Columbia University. He has also been invited to participate on a December 4 panel hosted by the Cyber Project at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center.
IDA Researcher Spoke on Panel at CDO Summit
Information Technology and Systems Division’s Priscilla Guthrie participated on a panel at the October 17 2019 MITRE Chief Data Officer (CDO) Summit in McLean, Virginia. The purpose of the summit was to “advance knowledge and accelerate adoption of the CDO role.” Forty-one Federal Government agencies and departments were represented at the summit.
Communications and Computing Science Researcher Receives Cotter Award
Congratulations to IDA’s Communications and Computing Science researcher Bill Carlson, the 2019 recipient of the George Cotter Award for Vision and Leadership in the Field of Data Analytics. The Association for High Speed Computing presented the award at the 2019 Chesapeake Large-Scale Analytics Conference held October 8-10. Bill’s citation, found on the conference website, notes his “sustained and ingenious contributions to the field.”
Science and Technology Policy Institute Researchers at Archer Center Symposium
Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI) Research Staff Member Bhavya Lal and STPI Science Policy Fellow Jericho Locke spoke at the symposium Nuclear Energy in Space: Nonproliferation Risks and Solutions, held October 17 at the Archer Center in Washington, DC.

IDA Center Director Featured in Book on Math Careers
Center for Communications Research, La Jolla (CCR-L) Director Skip Garibaldi is one of the people who describe their careers in the fourth edition of the American Mathematical Society’s book 101 Careers in Mathematics. In the book, he talks about the rewards of using his mathematics skills to help solve problems for the Department of Defense.

STPI Researcher Serves on Space Servicing Panels

She participated in a panel discussion an October 1 at the annual meeting of the Global Satellite Servicing Forum. An October 7 article in Space News captured some of the remarks.
IDA Researcher Joins NATO Panel Working Group
CARD’s Paul Thompson was recently invited to join the NATO System Analysis and Studies’ SAS-124 Research and Technology Group. This working group is focused on developing a visualization design framework for effectively communicating defense investment uncertainty and risk to decision-makers.
