When we talk about sustainment, we mean the art and science of achieving and maintaining readiness
Sustainment is the provision of logistics and personnel services to maintain operations until mission accomplishment and redeployment of the force. No single person or organization in the DoD has an end-to-end picture of the entire sustainment system. Access to data is often limited: databases are stovepiped and many organizations are reluctant to share data, even within the same branch. Even knowledge is stovepiped: many databases are cryptic and poorly documented, and knowledge can be tribal. Having the data isn’t enough, you have to be able to interpret it. Fixing this is a tall order: it requires a systematic long-term effort that crosses many organizations and echelons of the sustainment system. No single DoD group has the authority or analytic capability to lead this.
