Explore IDA Research

The mission of the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is to assist the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Staff, the Unified Commands, and Defense agencies in addressing important national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise. IDA also conducts related research for other government agencies on national problems for which the Institute’s skills and expertise are especially suited. IDA provides objective analyses of national security issues and related national challenges, particularly those requiring extraordinary scientific and technical expertise.

IDA Divisions Research

The support that IDA provides to our many sponsor organizations generally is defined by one or more of our nine core research and analytical capabilities covering a broad spectrum of national security related areas. In many cases, divisions takes the lead in the analysis although IDA fosters a collaborative environment among its research divisions.

IDA STPI Research

Since IDA began operating it in 2003, STPI has provided rigorous and high quality support for the Office of Science and Technology Policy on topics spanning the spectrum from the ethical, legal, and societal implications of nanotechnology research to aeronautics research and development; and from understanding the effects of U.S. visa policies to efforts that facilitate international research collaboration. In carrying out its work, STPI researchers consult widely with representatives from private industry, academia, and nonprofit organizations.

How To Sponsor Research

The IDA FFRDCs welcome the opportunity to perform research and analyses for a wide range of sponsors in the Department of Defense, as well as for other Federal Government organizations, state and local governments, and non-profit organizations.
