IDA Former President Receives John S. Foster, Jr. Medal

General Larry D. WelchGeneral Larry D. Welch, current senior fellow and former IDA president, was awarded the John S. Foster, Jr. Medal for his exceptional leadership in scientific, technical, and engineering development and policy formulation in support of U.S. nuclear security objectives. General Welch is only the second recipient of this honor established by Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS) and bestowed on an annual basis by the director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

IDA Board Member Receives Prestigious Award

Edwin Dorn, Under Secretary of Defense, Personnel and ReadinessIDA Board of Trustees member Edwin Dorn recently became the 33rd recipient of the American Political Science Association’s Hubert Humphrey Award, which recognizes notable public service by a political scientist. Mr. Dorn, a member of IDA’s Board since 1998, is known for his dedication to public policy and the preparation of generations of public servants.

Mr. Dorn’s rich career in public service includes appointments in both the Carter and Clinton presidential administrations, having served as Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness during President Bill Clinton’s first term. He has also served in various public policy think tanks before becoming dean of the LBJ School at the University of Texas in 1997 until 2005.

Other renowned dignitaries who have received this award include Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State to President Bill Clinton; Susan E. Rice, National Security Advisor to President Obama; and Brent Scowcroft, former National Security Advisor to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush.
