IDA and DHS Produce First-of-Its-Kind Cyber Event

IDA Cyber Workforce Summit

In conjunction with the DHS Cyberskills Management Support Initiative (CMSI) and DHS Science and Technology Directorate, IDA recently hosted a unique-to-IDA Cyber Workforce Summit that included five cybersecurity experts, more than 25 students and faculty from DC metropolitan area schools, and IDA research staff for a panel and open forum discussion. Speakers included Renee Forney, CMSI Executive Director; Douglas Maughan, Director of the Cybersecurity Division, DHS Science and Technology Directorate; Robert Knake, Senior Fellow at Council on Foreign Relations and Former Director for Cybersecurity Policy at the National Security Council; ITSD’s Brendan Farrar-Foley, who is also Chief Technology Officer, NAWAH Investments, and ITSD’s Stephen Olechnowicz, who focuses on Cyber Workforce Issues for the DoD Chief Information Officer.

ITSD Assistant Director and cybersecurity subject matter expert David Mussington organized the event and recruited the IDA and CFR panelists. Mr. Olechnowicz provided opening remarks on the recent high profile successful attacks against the federal government and private sector companies, and the national and federal government demand for cyber security professionals. Other topics included the future of the cybersecurity workforce, challenges facing those working in the field, recruiting and growth of the workforce, and the variety of opportunities available across the cybersecurity career field.

CMSI summarized the event, saying: “Discussions such as these provide students with insight into the various cybersecurity mission areas in private industry and the federal government. During the question/answer sessions, students have a chance to interact with leading cybersecurity professionals and subject matter experts. Lastly, these cybersecurity panel outreach events encourage students to consider pursuing cyber careers in both the public and private sectors.”
