Description

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers and provides rigorously objective scientific and technical analyses and advice to the federal government on national security and science policy.

One of these centers, the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI), assists the Executive Branch of the US government as it formulates federal S&T policy by providing objective, high-quality analytic support to inform policymakers. Chartered by an act of Congress in 1991, STPI provides the highest quality and rigorously objective technical analytical support for the Office of Science and Technology Policy and other government users, under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation.

STPI addresses S&T issues in the following areas:

  • National Security
  • Homeland Security
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection
  • Health and the Environment
  • Space and Transportation
  • Information/Telecommunication Infrastructure and Technology
  • Education and Training
  • Physical Sciences
  • Engineering and Technology
  • Research and Development Portfolio (including emerging S&T issues)
  • Development of New Analytic Methods and Tools
Primary Responsibilities

The technical staff at STPI:

  • Assembles timely and authoritative information regarding significant S&T developments and trends in the United States and abroad.
  • Analyzes and interprets this information, with particular attention to how it affects the federal S&T research and development portfolio and interagency and national issues.
  • Studies and analyzes alternatives available for ensuring the long-term strength of the United States in the development and application of science and technology, including identifying the appropriate roles for the federal government and other sectors.
  • Provides, upon request of the Director of OSTP, technical support and assistance for the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) and to committees and panels of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC).
  • In carrying out its work, STPI consults widely with representatives from private industry, institutions of higher education, and nonprofit organizations and incorporates into its work the information and perspectives derived from these consultations.
Requirements

We are seeking individuals with expertise in:

  • The physical or life sciences, engineering, economics and social sciences.  All candidates must exhibit excellent technical skills as well as show evidence of knowledge and experience in the policy related to their field of expertise.

We have specific openings for:

Biomedical Research Analyst:  This position requires an MD or a PhD with extensive biomedical research expertise.  The individual needs at least 15 years experience beyond the PhD and must know the programs and policies of the NIH.

Environmental or Energy Policy Analyst:  This position requires a PhD in environmental or energy policy or a related technology field.  This individual must have knowledge and experience in both the technical and the policy arenas.  In addition, the individual we seek must have at least 8 years experience beyond the PhD.
