Description

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers serving the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Unified Commands and Defense Agencies in addressing important national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise.

The System Evaluation Division (SED) conducts assessments of military effectiveness, system performance, and joint and allied interoperability. Such assessments assist DoD in making choices among competing systems, in setting force or inventory levels, and in identifying suitable concepts for employing systems in wartime. SED also conducts broad assessments of mission needs, develops system architectures, investigates new operational concepts, and examines the risks and costs that accompany technological integration.

Primary Responsibilities

Challenging career opportunities now exist in SED for individuals with broad interests and excellent quantitative and communication skills:

  • Systems analysis
  • Sensor systems (electro-optic, radar, acoustic, chemical & biological), electronic systems, platforms (ships, aircraft, space systems, land vehicles, robotics)
  • Command, control communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems, data fusion
Requirements

Research Staff Member - Full-time professionals with Ph.D. degrees or M.S. degrees with extensive experience. Generally involves work in a major collaborative role or as the task leader.  Expected to be innovative, aggressive, and self-starting. Candidates should have a graduate degree in a physical science, engineering, mathematics, computer science or operations research.

Research Assistant - Full-time professionals who typically work closely with Research Staff Members in the analysis of large data sets and/or design of analytical simulations. B.S. or M.S. (preferred) in the pure or applied sciences, including all fields of engineering.  A strong technical computing background is a requirement.
