The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers serving the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Department of Homeland Security, Unified Commands and Defense Agencies in addressing important national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise.
Under general supervision, this position assists in the design and administration of IDA’s internal and external computer network systems and services. Responsibilities include coverage for Help Desk tickets escalated to Tier 3, completion of Tier 3 tasks for Change Requests, participation on assigned project teams, primary investigation of and defensive actions for virus attacks and potential vulnerabilities. Due to the nature of this position, and the requirement at times for extended coverage, this position may be required to work hours outside of a regular schedule.
| | Primary Responsibilities |

Provides technical support for Help Desk tickets escalated to Tier 3 and completes Tier 3 tasks for Change Requests.

Assists in the administration and configuration of components for the internal and external network systems to include: monitoring, tuning capacity planning for file print and email servers, and adjusting configurations as necessary to resolve problems and enhance capabilities.

Assists in the administration of the IDA network to include switches, routers, remote access systems, patch panels, cable plans, production servers and network monitoring devices to ensure optimum performance.

Provides system support for IDA’s IT services to minimize downtime. This includes error detection, network analysis, and timely intervention to prevent or correct network problems.

Assists Information Security Analysts collect system security audits and perform Computer Emergency Response Team actions. Ensures that servers are configured to meet the intended security requirements and are compatible with existing security practices.

Takes a lead role on Enterprise IT Operations projects involving PC/Mac system integration testing, patching and census processes, anti-spyware initiatives and client data backup processes on the servers.

Administers the patch management server and manages patch deployments to servers, PCs, Mac workstations.

Performs the administration and maintenance of email server services (i.e. Exim, sendmail, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, MS Exchange, LDAP)

Keeps abreast of new and developing IT technologies and makes recommendations, as appropriate, to improve IDA’s services and system performance.

Partners with the IT Resource Analysts III on new IT initiatives and then assumes a maintenance role once the initiatives are implemented.

Participates in developing testing plans for new network hardware and software to ensure compatibility with IDA’s current network IT infrastructure.

Maintains written technical documentation (SOPs) for systems and processes under their control.

Informs the Supervisor, Server Operations, of any IT service problems or issues.

Performs other duties as assigned.
| | Requirements |
- BS/BA degree or equivalent experience in related field such as Computer Science, MIS or related area.
- Four or more years of work experience using a microcomputer. Minimum of three years work experience in computer user support.
- Four years experience in Network/System Administration and/or trouble-shooting network systems. Must be familiar with OSI layer 1 and 2, repeaters, bridges, switches, routers and network wiring. Experience with Cisco router IOS configuration, Enterasys Switches and routers a plus.
- Two or more years experience with various established network equipment (i.e. Ethernet, TCP/IP, ICMP, UDP, Gigabit Ethernet) and with Linux, UNIX and Windows operating systems.
- Two or more years experience with network and communication protocols and their components (i.e. Ethernet, TCP/IP, ICMP, UDP, NFS, DNS, SNMP, RMON, NIS, Gigabit Ethernet).
- Experience with the Internet protocols and services. Familiar with Apache servers, various web browsers, HTTP, HTML. Experience with set-up and support of Web Servers on a Linux, Unix and Windows system.
